Cast Thinking Study - Gold Buffer Torc Necklace

Image
This image shows a  hollow gold torc of "fused-buffer" type, with decorated terminals that are fused together unearthed in Ardnaglug Bog, Knock, Taghmaconnell, Athlone, Roscommon Ireland. This piece is dated 400-200 BCE and is comparable examples have been found on the Continent. The terminals and flanking cone-shaped mouldings bear repoussé decoration in the form of a continuous series of S-shapes and spirals, all of which terminate in round bosses. The background is dotted to accentuate the raised design. For the sake of this project I have excluded the decoration until I understand more about the abilities of the CNC tool.  This image shows a chamfer on the terminals.  4 point perspective of the work before slicing. Green = pipe command Purple = pipe and trim Blue = Pipe, trim, chamfer  Grey = this is a combination of pipe, trim, chamfer and 2 rail sweep Use of polysurface to slice the object.    A positive, and negative of my work. 3d Printed Hallow Form Object - Hybrid

Image
Kyungseo's work  architectural, balanced in both symmetry and scaling. abstract geometry, organic forms  Ciara's Work  The Hybrid - variations  Hybrid - Final Assembly    For our hybrid we split our design 50/50, to match the spacial restrictions laid out in the outline and credit the design of each member. The design of Kyungseo's base allowed for the structure to be firmly supported while standing and created strong base layer for 3d printing. The likely hood of a successful print is high because there are no true over hangs.

Hollow Form Object - concept generation

Simple, copy, rotate, loft, and twist Copied shape along x axis, scaled and rotated to individual proportions, lofted to create an enclosed form Spiral with ring rail sweep, sliced to force flat edge at top and bottom of the form, these flatted edges would be the open areas.  sprial, ring rail sweep, array to overlap  copy, loft, scale, hallow base

Rhino renders  to come Laser-cut file setup First layout for the laser cutter - 3 sheets of 12x24 plexiglass (to expensive!) Second layout - 2mm between cuts and off the edge of plexiglass ( Remember  to measure  plexiglass sheet for  the true size) Photos of your finished coaster prototype Reflection Learning moments; Spacing cuts do not overlap cut lines - laser cutters cuts are 1/4mm thick measure sheet for accurate dimension  cutouts will not fit back - eg circle cut from square. 1/4 missing, glue will like not hold. Recut circle and account for loss of cutline. *laser cut at an angle not true 90.  Thickness of material - design could benefit from .6mm over the.3mm used, Editing the CAD's slices for 25 pieces to reflect the 25th anniversary of Janet's Crown (the onsite sculpture this work is based off) pulling protective cover off the plexiglass is tedious  New commands; to come

Laser cut coaster: Select, refine, design.

I have chosen to reimagine Katie Ohe's tribute to former Calgary painter Janet Mitchel. Janets Crown is located in the green space at the south/west corner of the Alberta University of the Arts building. Installed in 2001, Janets Crown celebrates 25 years in 2026, the same year AUArts will celebrate its centennial.  These coasters can be dismantled into 25 individual coasters.  Janet’s Crown, 2001. By Katie Ohe, with the technical assistance of George Petitclerc (metal work), Neil Liske (painting) and Barry Klippert (installation). Industrial paint and clear coat on steel; polished stainless steel; grassy hillside. The piece occupies an area approximately 35 feet in diameter. The central form is five-feet-seven-and-a-half-inches high by five-feet wide; individual stars vary in size from 22 to 38 inches. Find the piece at the southwest of the main entrance to the Alberta College of Art + Design (ACAD), 1407 14 Ave. N.W. Piece was commissioned and donated by Rod Green and ...
